France's low-emission zones haven't been abolished: their repeal, voted in April 2026, was ruled unconstitutional in May.
France's low-emission zones, known as ZFE, took an unexpected turn in 2026. After a vote to abolish them, they remain firmly in place, and are even entering a stricter phase.
A repeal voted, then struck down
In April 2026, the National Assembly voted to abolish France's low-emission zones. But the Constitutional Council ruled that repeal unconstitutional in May 2026, keeping the system in force across the areas it applies to.
A stricter phase in 2026
Far from easing up, 2026 actually marks a gradual tightening: more and more cities are extending restrictions to Crit'Air 4 vehicles, and in some cases even Crit'Air 3. Roughly 42 French metro areas formally have a low-emission zone, but only around a dozen currently enforce real restrictions. Paris and Grenoble already target Crit'Air 3 vehicles, and Lyon has applied the same restriction since July 2026.
Enforcement remains gradual
Through December 31, 2026, checks in many zones remain sporadic and mostly educational rather than systematically fined.
Electric cars sit outside the restrictions
In this shifting landscape, electric cars carry a Crit'Air sticker that isn't affected by these restrictions, regardless of where the driver lives or usually travels, a strong argument as the rules are expected to keep tightening in the years ahead.
